A Pillion Friendly Ride through Stunning Vietnam
Vietnam is a fascinating country of staggering beauty and cultural complexities of dynamic developing mega-cities and hill tribe villages.
As we ride north along the spine of Vietnam bordering Laos, we pass remote villages and farming districts where little has changed for centuries. We will be travelling at a relaxed pace through provinces where tourists don’t venture staying in local hotels and guest houses.
After weaving our way along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, visiting historic war sites, coffee regions, gold mines, thundering waterfalls and the world’s largest cave plus more spectacular sites, we end our tour in Hanoi where after a full day tour you may choose to extend your adventure to one or many of Vietnam’s ‘hot spots’.
This is a perfect ride to share your experience with a pillion.

Arrival Day: Transfers
Arrive Ho Chi Minh City for same day transfer to Nha Trang.
We leave the beautiful beach of Nha Trang in the morning, but don’t worry: today’s ride takes us to some of the best beaches in Vietnam, via a stunning new coastal road to Vinh Hy Bay.
Here, the forested hills drop into the calm, blue waters at Vinh Hy fishing village, where after skirting the big, bright bay of Phan Rang, we head inland to the mountains of the Central Highlands, via twisting passes that snake through forests and into the cool climes of the Annamite Mountains. Dalat, known as the City of Eternal Spring, is our destination.
A former French colonial hill station, Dalat is dotted with crumbling villas and surrounded by fresh-scented pine forests.
The mountain riding continues as we wind our way through the jungles of the highland plateaus where wild tigers, elephants and rhinos were once hunted by Vietnam’s last emperor, Bao Dai.
A short but meandering ride takes us to Vietnam’s great coffee-growing region of Buon Ma Thuot our overnight stay. A thriving city built on the back of the aromatic bean that we all love, Buon Ma Thuot is a lively place and we’ll sample some of the town’s best brews.
Today we join the famous Ho Chi Minh Road, ploughing northwards through rubber plantations to Pleiku and Kon Tum, where reminders of the Vietnam War still linger. The road is wide and smooth as it glides across a vast landscape stretching to the Cambodian border.
Our night stop is the likeable mountain town of Kon Tum.
Now the Ho Chi Minh Road gets real: soaring over mountains and passing the sites of infamous battles from the Vietnam War, such as Dak To. In the 1960s and 70s these mountains echoed to the sound of bombs; now they are still and silent, creating a dramatic backdrop to a great day of riding from Kon Tum to the gold mining town of Kham Duc.
Get ready for a spectacular ride: a roller-coaster of endless mountain passes with switchbacks that will make you dizzy. The ride from Kham Duc to Khe Sanh is a glorious combination of rugged, jungle-covered terrain and verdant river valleys, dotted with the wood- and-thatch homes of Vietnam’s considerable population of ethnic minorities.
We’ll stop and chat to the friendly, smiling locals along the way.
Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any better, it does. Now is the time for us to take on the mighty Western Ho Chi Minh Road, undoubtedly one of the best rides in Asia. A narrow ribbon of paving slabs twists and curls along the remote Lao border, passing by turquoise rivers, thundering waterfalls, isolated hamlets, and into the legendary biosphere of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park, site of the largest cave in the world.
Phong Nha is our night stop.
A well-deserved rest today, but there’s still plenty to see and do. Phong Nha is the gateway to several spectacular cave systems, all of which will blow your mind with stalactites, stalagmites, and their awesome size and splendour.
We rejoin to Ho Chi Minh Road for a long and meandering ride through an exotic landscape of limestone karsts and tea plantations. The riding is good and our trusty bikes will purr all the way to Tan Ky, famous as the starting point of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the wartime supply route connecting the north of the country to the south.
Today, we say a sad farewell to the Ho Chi Minh Road, and head west into the jungles and borderlands abutting Laos. Taking roads less travelled we pass through remote minority hamlets where excited children jump out of their wooden-stilt homes to wave and shout ‘Hello!’ The hills are carpeted in bamboo forests as we reach our seldom-visited night stop at Quan Son.
Leading through abundant, rice-growing valleys shimmering green in the tropical sunshine, we ride alongside the great Ma River to Mai Chau. Our final day on the road has one more surprise in store: the lofty Hoa Binh Pass, which carves its path out of sheer rock, opening fantastic views over the mountaintops and into the distance. Then we glide into Hanoi in celebratory mood, having ridden thousands of kilometres through spellbinding landscapes, meeting many local people on the way, and creating memories that will last forever.
As we settle in for one more night together, we say our goodbyes to the bikes, tour members and crew - all over an awesome dinner of course! Our beloved bikes are then loaded onto trucks and taken back to Nha Trang, where they will receive plenty of love and care in order to be ready for the next adventure!
Enjoy a few well-earned beers together and remember to trade contact info with your new friends and fellow riders - this is a shared experience that will stay
with you forever, so let’s not lose touch!
Day 11 (Optional)
Hanoi has a thousand years of history packed into its narrow, busy little streets, so take a day to get to know your surroundings alongside your fellow riders. Taking a walk around Hanoi’s serene, tree-lined lakes is a great introduction to the charm of this city. We’ll delve into the network of tiny alleyways that make up Hanoi’s famous Old Quarter. Filled with old shop houses, temples, pagodas, and cafes, this is Hanoi’s ancient, beating heart.
We’ll stop for a Vietnamese espresso on the sidewalk to soak up the atmosphere, before poking our heads into the incense-filled courtyards of a temple or two around this impressively metropolitan yet surprisingly traditional city.
